Thai Bronze Head of the Buddha, Ayutthaya U-Thong Style, 14th-15th Century

About

A sublime Thai Ayutthaya Period U-Thong A style life-sized bronze head of the Buddha, circa 14th-15th century. The beautiful and serene face of the Buddha, framed by a narrow band under neatly arranged coiled hair and long, pendulous earlobes, features downcast eyes with high, arched brows, a flattened nose, squared lips pursed in an enigmatic smile, and a strong, square jawline. The square face, mouth, and jaw are all typical of the strong Khmer influence of early Thai Ayutthaya Buddhas. The fragmentary head, missing most of the crown and back of the head, still has a powerfully quiet presence. The bronze with a subtle and gorgeous patina of mottled deep greens and browns, with slight cuprite showing through. The hair with almost a silvery patina. Some areas of rust and salt corrosion. Mounted on an old (circa 1960s) custom wooden stand. Measures: Height of head only: 10".
