Tibetan Gilt Bronze Arm of the Buddha, Early 19th Century
$6,500

About
A stunningly graceful life-sized arm and hand of the Buddha, Tibet, late 18th or early 19th century. The hand is beautifully cast, with long, elegant fingers and nice detailing to the palm lines and the fingernails. The arm of repousse. The entirety richly gilt.
This arm would originally have been part of a life-sized statue of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, who is typically portrayed performing bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness, which symbolizes the moment the Buddha reached enlightenment. This arm would have been draped elegantly over his knee, the hand reaching down, with the tip of the middle finger touching the ground in front of him.
The interior of the arm contains original consecration materials, which we have not attempted to remove.
