Tibetan Gilt Bronze Figure of an Arhat

About

An unusual Tibetan gilt bronze figure of an arhat, one of the original disciples of the Buddha. This figure has been tentatively identified as Bakula, based on the fruit he holds in one hand, and the phial of amarita, the elixir of immortality, in the other. Considered a healer, Bakula was granted immunity to all physical diseases by the Buddha after sharing medicinal fruit with his other disciples. He is portrayed seated upon a cushioned platform in a position between vajra asana (the lotus position), and the royal ease position. He is bare chested, with a slightly protruding belly, and dressed in loose robes that drape over his shoulders and POOL loosely around his legs, exposing his bare feet. He has a broad, welcoming countenance. His mouth set in an infectious smile. His hair is cropped short, or possibly shaved. His ears pierced.
