About
A silk Japanese furisode Kimono with fine decoration, circa 1920s-1940s. The furisode was made with a light almond-color silk and red cotton lining. It was profusely decorated with Yuzen, a painstaking resistant dye technique using rice starch. Yuzen was invented in the 17th century and used in traditional kimono making. The Yuzen created an amazing imagery on this piece, taking the full advantage of what the technique can achieve. On a mountainous landscape shroud in shifting dark grey and deep green mist, cascading cypresses and swaying maples cover nearly the entire surface. Several flower carts for noble ladies, one of the beloved subjects in Japanese art, especially in kimono attire, were featured prominently on both sides. On top of the Yuzen design, embroidered cranes in colored threads fly across the kimono, adding the auspicious symbols as well as motion to the piece. A wonderful textile for the disconcerted collectors.
