About the Item

Beautiful vintage Japanese black silk Kurotomesode kimono hand dyed with Kabuki figures, bamboo, and plum blossom. It is in wonderful condition apart from some minor soiling around the hem and a stain on inside of lapel. We have not tried to remove either, circa 20th century. Kimono, meaning quite literally thing to wear, is a traditional Japanese garment and this one is absolutely fabulous! A Kurotomesode kimono is a black kimono patterned only below the waistline apart from five kamon, Japanese heraldic symbol, printed on the sleeves, chest and back of the kimono. They are the most formal kimono for married women and most often worn by the mothers of the bride and groom at weddings. This one meets that criteria with its black silk adorned with the five kamon and a gorgeous design below the waist of Japanese Kabuki figures with bamboo and plum blossom. However, it is also quite long with a slightly padded hem which is indicative of the Susohiki/Hikizuri kimono usually worn by geisha or stage performers. This specific kimono is partially lined with an incredible red silk. Whether you decide to wear this or display this you should make it yours soon.
