Philippe Starck
A ubiquitous name in the world of contemporary architecture and design, Philippe Starck has created everything from hotel interiors and luxury yachts to toothbrushes and teakettles. Yet for every project in his diverse portfolio, Starck has maintained an instantly recognizable signature style: a look that is dynamic, sleek, fluid and witty.
The son of an aircraft engineer, Starck studied interior design at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. He started his design career in the 1970s decorating nightclubs in the city, and his reputation for spirited and original interiors earned him a commission in 1983 from French president François Mitterrand to design the private apartments of the Élysée Palace. Starck made his name internationally in 1988 with his design for the interiors of the Royalton Hotel in New York, a strikingly novel environment featuring jewel-toned carpeting and upholstery and furnishings with organically shaped cast-aluminum frames. He followed that up in 1990 with an equally impressive redesign of the Paramount Hotel in Manhattan, a project that featured over-scaled furniture as well as headboards that mimicked Old Masters paintings.
Like their designer, furniture pieces by Starck seem to enjoy attention. Designs such as the wedge-shaped J Series club chair; the sweeping molded-mahogany Costes chair; the provocative Ara table lamp; or the sinuous WW stool never fail to raise eyebrows. Other Starck pieces make winking postmodern references to historical designs. His polycarbonate Louis Ghost armchair puts a new twist on Louis XVI furniture; his Out-In chair offers a futuristic take on the classic English high-back chair. But for all his flair, Starck maintains a populist vision of design. While one of his limited-edition Prince de Fribourg et Treyer armchairs might be priced at $7,000, a plastic Starck chair for the Italian firm Kartell is available for around $250. He was an American fashion designer known as Kasper. He studied English and advertising at New York University and fashion at the Parsons School of Design in New York from 1951–53 and l'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1953. He left NYU to serve in the US Army in Europe. After World War II he enrolled at Parsons, where he became a protégé of milliner Fred Frederics. After graduating, he returned to Paris for two years developing his skills in design while working for Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, and Marcel Rochas. When he returned to the US, he worked for Frederics at Mr. John. He was also a famous art collector. He was an avid art collector, and in 2011, the Morgan Library and Museum devoted an exhibition, called “Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs,” to the designer.unnumbered copy of a run of 1000. With letter from Despont to his client. Mr. Despont was Associate Architect for the Centennial Restoration of the Statue of Liberty and has completed the restoration of Clayton, the Frick family mansion in Pittsburgh. Mr. Despont designed the Decorative Arts Galleries of the new J. Paul Getty Museum and, in collaboration with Richard Meier, was responsible for the interior design of the museum's sculpture and painting galleries. The office also completed the 50,000 square foot flagship store on Bond Street for Ralph Lauren. In the US, the firm designed the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue on East 63rd Street in New York and the flagship store for Harry Winston in Beverly Hills, California. Mr. Despont and his office have completed several very high end hotel projects. Among them are the renovation of the Carlyle Hotel in New York, Claridge's and The Dorchester in London, and Boca Raton Resort & Club in Florida. Current hotel projects include the renovation of the Ritz Paris, the Dorchester Collection's new 45 Park Lane Hotel in London, The Chatwal in New York, and the Divan Hotel in Istanbul. volume with its own dustjacket.
