Antique Skull and Crossbones cast architectural salvaged decorative building element, most likely frieze panel fragment. The sculptural Italian Renaissance Memento Mori style architectural ornament crafted of high-quality terracotta, depicting skull and crossbones in relief, above a fiolated border of oak leaves and acorns. Dimensions: (approx) 8.25" High, 9.5" Wide, 2" Deep, 6lbs Memento mori (Latin for 'remember that you [have to] die') is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in funerary art and architecture from the medieval period onwards.
