Exquisite Pair of 19th Century Hand Carved Hindu Temple Struts, South India
About the Item
An exquisite pair of hand carved Hindu wooden temple struts, mounted on stone bases, from the 19th century. This pair of antique temple struts from S. India are magnificently carved with depiction of a scaled elephant kneeling serenely on a tower of lotus flowers, with figure seated at front top of head. On each side of the carving, most likely a representation of Ganesha with his elephant head. There is a mostly neutral coloration to these pieces, with pops of a light apricot found in various areas. This pair of 19th century Hindu temple struts would be stunning flanking a doorway, or perhaps a fireplace.
