Rare Holophane Style German Arts & Crafts World War Pendant, 'Asteroid 414'

About the Item

Early 20th century, good size Arts & Crafts hallway, kitchen or bedroom pendant. This antique German pendant is a bit of an enigma. This Arts & Crafts, brass and glass pendant looks exactly like the Holophane pendants that collectors around the world appreciate for their wonderful shapes and materials. And although this pendant has the exact same shape, is made of the exact same glass (techniques), and has the exact same mechanism of opening the lower half (in order to change the light bulb), this apparently is not a Holophane pendant. How the Germans in the 1910s-1930s managed to patent this lamp, to us, is a mystery. On the lower glass half the marks read Asteroid 414 and Patent. In the rim of the upper half it reads D.R.P. (which stands for Deutsches Reichs Patent). Maybe in one of the world wars Germany simply copied perfect designs, because no one could prevent them from doing so or maybe somehow they did get a license from Holophane. That mystery could make this the perfect pendant for collectors of Holophane and/or German world war artifacts. If anyone can explain what it is that we are offering here then please let us know. We are always keen to learn. The rim of the upper half has a chip on top. This is not visible, because it is underneath the brassl frame.
