High-level manufactures, lines that follow the different stylistic declinations (Rococo, Neoclassicism, Directoire) adapting to the taste of the moment are carved by the cabinetmakers of the time: in Venice, wood carvers are called marangoni, who work alongside painters and decorators who, in turn, imitating lacquer varnishing, are inspired by the art of the ancient Orient and at the same time depict Venetian landscapes and floral decorations. Characteristic is the Rococo lacquered furniture (from 1730 onward), with its curved forms, wavy contours, and subtleties of ornamentation through the use of fine woods, inlaid with motifs of different inspiration, especially oriental. But the entire 18th century will see lacquered furniture as the protagonist, whose artistic technique will be taken up again in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the rest of Europe as well (France, England, Holland, Portugal) lacquer found its manifestation in the furniture sector, thus fostering the development of new craft categories specializing in this field, of which Venetian and French lacquerers in particular will enjoy fame.
