In veined statuary marble with typical straight lines and symmetrical sculptured decoration, French, 18th century. With rectangular moulded shelf above the frieze which is carved with scrolling, flowering acanthus. The jambs in the form of tapering consoles, with rounded bracket shaped shoulders capped by rectangular blockings delicately carved with more acanthus, symbolic of Imperial Rome...

Of typical rectangular form, of statuary and black and white 'Grande Antique' marble. The oblong moulded shelf protruding over the jamb blockings, the frieze with a well figured inlaid panel of Grande Antique flanked by the protruding blockings inlaid with black and white. The pilaster jambs in the form of tapering fluted half rounded columns in white marble upheld by rounded coloured marbles socles, the flutes at the lower end with rounded Grande Antique cable stops echoing the colored capitals above. Grand Antique marble was quarried in ancient times from Aubert, Saint Girons, Ariege, France, it fell into disuse until the late 17th century and when rediscovered was highly praised and much sort after. A French 19th century, Louis XVI style antique fireplace mantel in Spanish Brocatello marble. The slightly bowed frieze with continuous finger fluted decoration. The canted jambs with vertical flutes surmounted by carved flower heads.

A late 18th century style chimneypiece in Statuary and Siena marbles of truly exceptional quality. The moulded shelf, carved with dentils and Egg & Dart, breaks forward above the central tablet and square corner blocks. The tablet depicts a scene of Bacchic putti dancing and revelling with music, some holding grapes and ewers of wine, one holding a Thrysus, a spear headed by an acorn often carried by Bacchus, to the right a putto has the legs of a goat, and centred with a putto riding a finely carved ram. The tablet flanked by a frieze decorated by alternating finger flutes inlaid with Siena, and carved finely carved bows and flowers. The cornerblocks, carved to the front with Roman urns, sit above composite Ionic columns, also inlaid with Siena flutes. The columns are fully detached in the round, on turned socle plinths above square footblocks. The convent Siena is of particularly noteworthy quality.
