Antique George III Style White Statuary and Sienna Marble Fireplace Mantel

About the Item

This striking fireplace boasts a finely carved centre tablet depicting a scene from the story of Androcles and the Lion. The frieze is supported by a pair of free-standing, fluted, ionic columns, beneath distinctive goat-mask end-blocks. The story of Androcles and the Lion can be traced back to antiquity and tells of a fugitive slave who unwittingly took shelter in the den of a ferocious but wounded lion. Overwhelmed with compassion, Androcles removed the thorn from the injured beast’s paw. The lion, in turn, became a benign companion to the slave on his journey through the wilderness. Some years later, Androcles was recaptured and condemned to be devoured by wild animals in the Circus Maximus in Rome. On entering the arena he was confronted by the same lion, who recognising his erstwhile friend, showed only affection a gesture which earned both slave and lion their freedom. Several comparable fireplaces with identical tablets exist. One can be seen at West Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Another is at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool, both attributed to Sir Henry Cheere (1703-1781). A third, very similar to this, was photographed at Roehampton House, London, in the early twentieth century. The subject of Androcles and the Lion appears in a slightly different version on fireplaces by Thomas Carter (dated 1756) at Saltram House, in Devon, and Uppark in West Sussex, confirming the enduring appeal of the subject among the wealthy and fashionable landed classes.
