George III Statuary Marble Chimneypiece

About the Item

A fine eighteenth century George III chimneypiece in statuary marble. The solid reverse breakfront shelf sits above a frieze which is delicately carved with a stylised foliate design. This is centred by a tablet depicting a putto imitating Bacchus riding on a goat drawn chariot with two other putti in attendance. The endblocks are carved with urns hung with bellflowers and are supported by carved jambs which depict one putting holding a rake, whilst the opposing holds a scythe above trailing bellflowers. English, c.1790 with restorations. Ingrounds are a later replacement, and these can in turn be replaced with another marble.
