Nine Minton Arts & Crafts Period Encaustic Ceramic Tiles, England Circa 1875

About the Item

A group of nine Minton Arts & Crafts period encaustic ceramic tiles decorated with geometric motifs in a striking palette of royal blue, tan, white and terracotta, one tile being of a slightly different pattern which could be used to centre the remaining eight. All bearing impressed factory marks on the reverse, MINTON & CO. PATENT. STOKE UPON TRENT. The encaustic method is a lengthy process that first involves moulding each tile with a handmade pattern, then filling in each individual segment of the pattern by hand with coloured liquid clay (slip), after which each is then allowed to dry before being fired in a kiln for approximately 24 hours.
