French 19th Century Carved White Marble Allegorical Garden Fountain with Putti

About the Item

A fine and charming French 19th century carved white marble allegorical garden fountain group of two playful putti seated on a rocky outcrop with an upturned amphora supporting a stylized fish, drilled for water, together with a Rosso Verona marble "D" shell-shaped scalloped basin, circa 1870-1880. These type of beautiful and charming allegorical themed carved marble fountains depicting children or cherubs and dolphins are usually found decorating the gardens of many Royal Palaces, Castles and Villas all across Europe such as the Palais du Versailles and many others. Most of them however almost never become available for private acquisition. The rock stand pedestal supporting the marble sculpture and shell-basin (underneath) as shown on the last image, which was taken at the palatial garden from where it was removed and acquired, is lacking and not part of this fountain lot. The sculpture and scalloped basin have since been cleaned and restored as shown on the other eight images. The installation of this fountain will require building a structural base pedestal or support in order to set it up and be displayed as shown. It will also require plumbing equipment and water connection to make it functional. Sculpture height: 32 1/4 inches (81.9 cm). Sculpture width: 27 inches (68.6 cm). Sculpture depth: 28 1/2 inches (72.4 cm). Basin height: 12 1/2 inches (31.8 cm). Basin width: 45 1/2 inches (115.6 cm). Basin depth: 22 1/2 inches (57.2 cm).

    Located in Dallas, TX
19th century French brass wall fountain ~ Lavabo is a charming relic from a bygone era! Back before the days of ubiquitous running water in every room of the house, folks were obliged to create ingenious solutions like this wall fountain. Such a piece would be placed just outside or inside the back door, so that when it was time to come inside from working in the fields, one could wash hands and face before entering the home. The reservoir above held sufficient water for the task, and the basin below captured the waste water for dumping later via an easily removable hanging system. The cast brass valves...
