Brown Jordan
Pioneers of furniture designed especially for the outdoors, Brown Jordan channeled — in tables, lounge chairs and armchairs — the carefree postwar California spirit and helped create a new space in American life: the patio.
The outdoor furniture brand began to take shape in 1945, when Robert Brown, an industrial designer, and Hubert Jordan met in Pasadena, California, and began collaborating on their first design, a traditional wrought-iron breakfast set they called Morning Glory. They offered it for sale via the upscale department store Bullock’s Wilshire. The store ran an ad about the new outdoor set, and, by the end of the day, it had sold out completely.
A few years later, in 1948, the duo followed up with a new, very different design: the Leisure collection, one of the first to combine aluminum with vinyl “lace.” The materials were newly available after the war and offered a mid-century silhouette that was also lightweight and specifically designed for outdoor use. Some of Brown Jordan’s most singular pieces arose from another postwar material: Copper piping salvaged from ships that had sunk at Pearl Harbor was used to create sculptural, curvilinear outdoor furnishings as part of the Walter Lamb Bronze collection, which was first launched in the 1940s.
The Tamiami collection, by Brown Jordan in-house designer Hall Bradley, followed in the 1950s, with streamlined aluminum frames and vinyl seats and backs woven in a diagonal pattern. The line quickly became popular not only in California but across the country and on the East Coast, prompting an expansion from the original two colorways to a wider assortment of of-the-moment hues.
Brown Jordan’s offerings gained recognition as both innovations and symbols of a new kind of leisure. Tadao Inouye’s Kantan lounge chair, launched in 1956, was chosen by the Department of Commerce to be exhibited at the 1959 Industrial World’s Fair in Tokyo. In 1968, it was featured in the Cooper Hewitt’s “Please Be Seated” exhibit.
Bright colorways, metallics, pastels, powder coating and weather-ready materials became some of Brown Jordan’s hallmarks, heralding durable, design-forward furniture that helped create the modern idea of outdoor living.

Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The entire table has been sanded and painted with Krylon ivory gloss paint. Wonderful vintage Tropitone outdoor chairs with vinyl straps & cushions, set of 6. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The chair frames and cushions have been pressure washed and professionally cleaned. We have touched up some places on the frames with Krylon ivory gloss and we have ordered new feet for the chairs. The cushions still have some stubborn stains after cleaning and two of the cushions are a slightly different color of white from the rest. Please see photos and zoom in for details. This is a lovely set of six mid-century modern outdoor dining chairs by Tropitone comprised of fabulous weather resistant ivory painted aluminum frames and uv-resistant vinyl back and seat straps. They have their original loose seat cushions featuring blue and white striped weather resistant fabric covers. Two of the chairs are a little more ivory than white, it’s the way we obtained them, And they’re FABULOUS!! We believe that these are an older “vintage” version of the current Khana chair by Tropitone because these have straight backs not curved; tubular arms slightly flared outward not straight; as well as slightly curved legs. It’s a comfortable, sturdy design ready to surround any style outdoor table. And, if you’re in search of outdoor tables as well, check out the many options we have listed here for sale! They are ready to be the new vintage addition to your patio, deck, porch, or out by the pool. Tropitone was founded in Sarasota, Florida in 1954 by Burt M. Baker, a retired Lockhead Engineer and executive at Grand Rapids Chair Company. Tropitone served the contract market, including hotels, motels, clubs, and resorts with high performing outdoor patio furniture. In the 1960’s they introduced powder coated aluminum finishes to the industry. Utilizing a multi-step wash process that ensures a lasting finish, Tropitone’s aluminum frames prevail under any environmental conditions. Tropitone also pioneered the technique of double-wrapping vinyl straps around the powder coated aluminum frame for extra durability, which continues today. In 1970’s they established operations in Irvine, California which provided a bi-coastal manufacturing to North American customers. In the 80’s they released “Comfort is Key” cushions and sling seating. Tropitone sling seating has the perfect combination of clean lines, designer fabrics and carefree maintenance. In the 90’s EZ Span and Basta Sole Umbrellas were introduced and in the 2000’s woven furniture and Relax Plus cushion seating was created including replications of rattan or wicker outdoor furniture. Tropitone continued to launch new systems for their furniture from 2000 through 2014 when they celebrated their 60 years in business when they joined forces with Brown Jordan International.
