Folk Art Patio and Garden Furniture

FOLK ART STYLE

Folk art is a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Antique, new and vintage folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, duck decoys, portraiture and paintings, carnival art and quilts.

Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.

Elsewhere, the vast range of work associated with Mexican folk art includes masks made by Mexican craftspeople for traditional celebrations and ceremonial dances. Mexican masks are part of the country’s folk-art traditions that go back thousands of years and play a role in festivals and theater.

Works in the folk art tradition are valuable because of the skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story.

During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.

Folk art brings vibrant culture and traditions into your home. Browse an extensive collection of antique, new and vintage folk art on 1stDibs.

Dedon "Obelisk" Garden Furniture
By Frank Ligthart, DEDON
Located in Hanover, MA
BG GALLERIES SALE PRICE THROUGH 30 April 2024 The Obelisk designed by Frank Ligthart for Dedon, 2008. No longer in production. It is composed of two pairs of matching high- and low-back chairs and a conical table. The base of the table supports all the chairs when stacked into its sculptural shape for storage. We also have available separately a near complete additional Obelisk consisting of three of the S chairs and one M chair plus the table. Image 9 shows the complete Obelisk plus the spare table and chairs. Best of both worlds is to have the spare set for seating together with the complete Obelisk as sculpture, until additional seating is required. Image 8 shows the "spare" set which includes 3 "S" chairs (instead of 2) and 1 "M" chair (instead of 2) and one table base. The discounted price for the spare set on its own is $3800. The spare set will not stack to form the obelisk because that requires two of each chair. This is the ultra-chic original space-saving solution for garden, pool or terrace furniture...

Emile Taugourdeau French Faux Bois Concrete Garden Table
Located in Forney, TX
A whimsical faux bois concrete garden table by Emile Taugourdeau (French, 1917-1989). This outdoor table from France has been designed in faux bois fashion, lending it's appearance to resemble that of a tree; the circular cast concrete top a thickly sliced slab, adorned with beautiful polychrome fragmented tile mosaic inlay, over a naturalistic tree trunk base, with rounded frieze, rising on tripod legs designed to appear as various limps. The heavy reinforced concrete is carved and sculpted with detailed texture, mimicking a live tree bark exterior. The round-shaped top and base has a central hole, allowing an umbrella to be placed at it's center. The wonderful example of French folk art and whimsical faux bois design is a great way to add functional rustic character and middle earth charm...
