19th century Grand Tour Green Marble Tazza Vase with Classical Carved Details

About the Item

A Grand Tour 19th century green marble tazza vase with classical carved motifs on tall pedestal. After a model of the renowned Warwick vase, this Grand Tour green marble gadrooned tazza vase is raised on a circular foot and plinth base mounted on a square pedestal carved with smiling maenad masks crowned with grapevine. The body of the vase is detailed with carved Bacchus and Hercules masks and their attributes, club and thyrsus, between two satyrs, the pelt of the Nemean Lion below. Intertwined vinestock handles flank the vase, joined by a garland of vine branches below an egg-and-dart rim. The Warwick Vase is a colossal ancient Roman marble vase excavated in fragments from Emperor Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli in the late 18th century. Reconstructed by neoclassical artists of the time such as Piranesi, it soon became one of the attractions for 18th century tourists and thus reproduced to be brought as a souvenir. The beautiful green Serpentino Moschinato marble of this 19th century Grand Tour carved tazza vase, along with its delightful classical Bacchic ornament, would bring a touch of stateliness to any traditional home.
