From our recent Japanese acquisitions travels The first example we have seen. A rare find, this 150 year old bronze "nine ring Hoju" finial temple ornament (sorin) came from famous Nara City. It might make a wonderful indoor or outdoor sculpture for your special sun room, deck, or garden space. "Hoju "is a Buddhist sacred jewel. Coming from a private collection, this 63" tall antique hand cast bronze temple finial with exquisite details dates to the late Edo or early Meiji period, 19th century. It reportedly is from Nara region and in fact if you Google Nara temples you will find a similar "9 ring" finial adorning one of its most sacred Buddhist temple buildings at Horyu-ji. Horyu-ji (Temple of the Flourishing Law). This Buddhist temple was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in Nara Prefecture, Japan. Its full name is Horyu Gakumonji or Learning Temple of the Flourishing law, the complex serving as both a seminary and monastery. The temple's pagoda is widely acknowledged to be the oldest wooden building existing in the world, underscoring Horyu-ji's place as one of the most celebrated temples in Japan. This finial ornament consists of different sections from top to bottom: the sacred jewel (hoju) dragon wheel (ryusha) water flame (suien) sacred rings (horin) flower bowl (ukebana) Reversed bowl (fukubachi) Dew basin (roban) This bronze temple finial ornament is the first of its kind we have had the pleasure of handling. It possesses a fine old patina from good age. About Hoju Hoju (Hoju) is a sacred gem. Usually a ball or tear-drop shape object that is sacred to Buddhism. It is believed to have the power to expel evil, cleanse corruption, and fulfill wishes. This shape is displayed on the top of a pagoda (sorin) and on the top of a pyramidal roof (hogyozukuri) of a Buddhist hall.
