Pair Monumental Figural Supports Columns Sculptures Representing Atlas Hercules
About the Item
Two carved of oak columns or pedestals, each of a muscular male figure, representing Atlas or Hercules, the head inclined forward and supporting as well with the shoulders a square platform.
These stunning and beautifully crafted wooden sculptures are realized in Italy, circa 1920. It presents Atlas- the Titan in Greek mythology condemned to hold up the celestial heavens or sky for eternity after the Titanomachy (a ten year series of battles fought in Thessaly). Here, Atlas- in oak wood- a grape leaf covering his genitalia. This piece would be a winning acquisition for those interested in Greek mythology/history, as well as those for a penchant for beautifully crafted sculptures and Fine objects.
c. around 1920-1925, possibly Belgian or Italian.
