A charming French Majolica Barbotine glazed floral earthenware basket circa 1885 in an unusual square shape. Please look at the fantastic combination of form and colour in this excellent example of the beauty of Barbotine. The front and back of this container showcase a dazzling array of raised designs highlighted by the intense colours used. Interestingly the sides where the beautiful handles are attached remain flat with a solid colour and form an attractive contrast against the bold handles that begin as a single large stem that branches out to the rim in two separate sections. The decorative design of the handles is a wonderful array of branches with leaves, flowers and bunches of fruits distinguished by both shape and colour. The brilliant sheen of this glazed ceramic in France is known by the short term Barbotine after the gentleman who perfected and patented the process. After the colour is applied the entire piece is coated with a tin based glaze that retains its shiny reflective surface for many years. The design on the front and back is fascinating in its display of geometric and organic patterns set against each other. The cobalt blue strap work pattern seems symmetrical on first glance but please notice how the strap work crosses over and under differently whether it is on the right or the left. In addition the organic pattern of the foliage also appears to move both forward and behind the strap work. The change in the surface profile is a particular attribute of Barbotine and serves to heighten the three dimensional realism. This particular piece is known as a "cachepot" that translates as "hidden pot" as it is used to conceal the pot that holds the plant. The beauty of the cachepot itself means that it may be displayed on its own or used at it was originally intended to hold a beautiful specimen plant.
