Old Eroded Teak Burlwood Mortar with Handle, North Thailand, Mid-20th Century

About

Old Eroded teak burl wood mortar with handle, North Thailand, mid-20th century. Offered by Bruce Hughes. This rustic mortar comes from rural northern Thailand where in its time it would have been used, together with a heavy wooden pounder, on an almost daily basis. This piece was fashioned by hand using basic tools, and is derived from a particularly Fine quality teak burl wood. Years of exposure and use have lent it a charming character. We have lightly cleaned, Fine sanded and buffed it, and have leveled the bottom so the mortar sits flat and is stabile. No finish or wax has been applied, but we would gladly wax the piece if requested to do so. If you would like to use the mortar as a planter -- lovely home for an orchid -- please note that the pounding hole is eroded clear through to the bottom. We could close the hole from the bottom if requested, and at no charge. Condition: As mentioned, the pounding hole is eroded clear through to the bottom. Otherwise the mortar is strong and stabile. The surface is distressed and patinated, but structurally fully sound. Dimensions: 25 inches wide by 17-1/2 inches deep by 13-1/2 inches tall.
