Monumental Oak Spiral Staircase With Massive Oak Trunk in One Piece ± 450 cm
Located in Baambrugge, NL
A monumental, completely free-standing, dark oak spiral staircase. The central newel of this very large spiral staircase consists of an entire solid oak tree trunk, which is made into a strong pole with a diameter of 30 cm. Because of this, the bullnose steps around it have remained firmly in place for 150 years without sagging. The oak round edge (stringer) that surrounds the steps consists of large, hand-worked, strong pieces of oak that show the extraordinary craftsmanship of the stair builders. The banister consists of a wrought iron railing that on wrought iron spindles or balusters with rosettes, starting with an ornamented cast iron hand baluster. The underside of the stairs, between the stringer and the central newel, was originally plastered. This plaster had to be removed in order to break out the staircase in one piece, without cutting it. When the stairs are placed in a new house, plaster can be applied again. The photos show how we got the stairs out in one piece by breaking down an inner wall and an outer wall. The original plaster of the stairs is also clearly visible in the photos. The measurements are: Total height: 448.5 cm 22 steps of 19.5 cm high plus the last step to the landing is 23 x 19.5 = 448.5 cm Step width: 77 cm Width bottom step: 88 cm Depth steps: 9 to 46 cm, in the middle of the step ± 30 cm. Pole diameter: 19 cm Total staircase diameter (including the handrail): 175 cm Height of the round outer edge of the stairs 20.5 cm. Height of the bannister...

Unusual Antique Staircase Newel Post from France, Dated 1715
Located in Dallas, TX
This wonderful French, hand-carved newel post dates to the final year of King Louis XIV (1643-1715). A wonderful dog rests atop a scrolling acanthus leaf c-scroll, while it's front paws hold a cartouche dated 1715 (please see photo.) Beneath the cartouche is a Louis XIV motif called a Lambrequin or campane runner with tassels and two fleur de lys motifs on it . This motif is carried through to the large hand-carved fleur de lys and acanthus leaves on the outside curve of the newel post. Another Louis XIV motif, the rosette, is in the center of the circle. Clusters of grapes fit within acanthus leaves are at the edge where the post would have fit into the next stairway piece. The interior if fully carved, duplicating the design of the outer curve. Both sides are connected by a beaded molding on a foot of leaves and scrolls. From circa 1710 to the early 1800s, specialty workshops in southwest France created newel posts on commission for important properties. Animals were sometimes carved atop newel posts for symbolic value. For instance, lions and snakes...

Vintage, New and Antique Stairs

While they’re best known for their functionality, a well-designed set of vintage, new or antique stairs can also make as much of an impact in your space as any other piece of well cared for furniture.

From mid-century modern stairs to Victorian stairs to Art Nouveau stairs, different movements in design over time saw furniture makers exploring a range of inspirations as well as working with a variety of materials. This is good news for you, as it means that stairs have been designed in a wealth of furniture styles over the years and that there is a perfect set of stairs for every space.

A library ladder, whether it’s going to serve its primary purpose or be used as a home accent, is a common example of interior stairs that help make the most use of vertical space. A set of stairs for your home library is going to allow you to reach those coveted rare volumes from your lofty well-appointed shelves. And because you’ve invested so much time in styling your bookcases or library shelving, why not own an appropriately decorative structure to access your books?

Hand-carved embellishments in post toppers and stair pillars distinguish Victorian-era stairs from other periods. Furniture designed during this time period, which occurred during the reign of Queen Victoria in England, was luxurious. Even furnishings as functional as stairs were made from dark woods such as mahogany or rosewood and boasted ornate curved lines and stately proportions. All those who are fascinated by Art Nouveau furniture know that designers of the period sought freedom from the stuffy social and artistic strictures of the Victorian era. Art Nouveau staircases were highly decorative, including striking iron spiral staircases with intricate latticework on the risers and works carved in oak with newel posts that saw an integration of natural world motifs.

No matter how they are incorporated into a home or office, vintage, new and antique stairs can be practical and aesthetically pleasing — the very definition of art meeting functionality. Find yours on 1stDibs today.
