Monumental Oak Spiral Staircase With Massive Oak Trunk in One Piece ± 450 cm
Located in Baambrugge, NL
A monumental, completely free-standing, dark oak spiral staircase. The central newel of this very large spiral staircase consists of an entire solid oak tree trunk, which is made into a strong pole with a diameter of 30 cm. Because of this, the bullnose steps around it have remained firmly in place for 150 years without sagging.
The oak round edge (stringer) that surrounds the steps consists of large, hand-worked, strong pieces of oak that show the extraordinary craftsmanship of the stair builders.
The banister consists of a wrought iron railing that on wrought iron spindles or balusters with rosettes, starting with an ornamented cast iron hand baluster.
The underside of the stairs, between the stringer and the central newel, was originally plastered. This plaster had to be removed in order to break out the staircase in one piece, without cutting it. When the stairs are placed in a new house, plaster can be applied again. The photos show how we got the stairs out in one piece by breaking down an inner wall and an outer wall. The original plaster of the stairs is also clearly visible in the photos.
The measurements are:
Total height: 448.5 cm
22 steps of 19.5 cm high plus the last step to the landing is 23 x 19.5 = 448.5 cm
Step width: 77 cm
Width bottom step: 88 cm
Depth steps: 9 to 46 cm, in the middle of the step ± 30 cm.
Pole diameter: 19 cm
Total staircase diameter (including the handrail): 175 cm
Height of the round outer edge of the stairs 20.5 cm.
Height of the bannister...

"Cité Radieuse" Staricase by Charles Edouard Jeanneret Known as Le Corbusier
By Le Corbusier
Located in Altwies, LU
Larch uprights, eleven steps in exotic wood. Ramps in black lacquered metal made by Jean Prouvé workshop.
Restoration of use and maintenance on the ramps.
Provenance: Housing unit, Briey en Forêt.
The staircase, identical in each duplex, is the result of a close collaboration between Jean Prouve and Le Corbusier.
Its beginnings date back to 1922. Le Corbusier wanted to create then "vertical garden cities", capable of responding simultaneously to the aspiration of the individual house (in contact with nature) and to the advantages of the collective building (access to modern facilities ). This idea, perfected during the 1930s, led to a large building project in 1939 with "inner streets", "duplex" apartments, equipped roof terraces and integrated businesses.
The Housing Unit of Briey, also called Radiant City of Briey-en-Forêt, is a housing unit built between 1959 and 1960 in Meurthe-et-Moselle by the French-Swiss architect Le Corbusier according to the model he has established for Marseilles. The housing project is part of a broader project of a new residential district in the heart of the forest, in this town in the Lorraine coalfield. It is Georges-Henri Pingusson who is the chief architect of this neighbourhood project and who also realizes two sets of 100 homes and a school near the unit. The goal is to house the population then in full increase in connection with the expansion of iron mines and the steel industry. In 1955, Le Corbusier officially contacted the Briey town hall, he was named chief architect of the project and André Wogenscky...

Pair of Carved French Bleached Oak Stairway Newel Posts, Circa 1880
Located in Dallas, TX
These elaborate newel posts were hand-carved in France, circa 1880. At some point, the oak wood was stripped, leaving minimal traces of the original darker finish.
Newel posts are upright pillars used to support the handrails of staircases. Although a newel post’s primary function is structural, they are often aesthetically appealing, being either tightly turned pieces or highly carved. Our well-carved newel posts have a half-gourd shape and would have been flanking the base of a beautiful set of stairs. A rectangular plinth is surmounted by a large volute acanthus leaf. The “tail” of each volute extends upwards, branching out along the edge of the straight back. Similar carvings appear on both sides. Three acanthus leaf scrolls adorn the front side of each post, with the bottom leaf continuing downwards along the facing until it merges with the bulbous volute.
Our great looking French bleached oak newel...
