About

This is an antique carved limestone statue of the great Roma or Capitoline Wolf. The wolf and twin babies are one of the most recognizable icons of the ancient world, and have been depicted in artifacts dating all the way back to the 4th or 5th century BC. As the story goes, the twins, Romulus and Remus were abandoned by their Grandfather and eventually rescued and cared for by this she-wolf. A herdsman later found the twins and raised them. It would be Romulus who would eventually become the founder and first King of Rome in the 8th century BC.

The Capitoline Wolf, in bronze, is the most well-known depiction, currently residing in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. There are other bronze statues that stand in several cities around the world. These were bronze copies commissioned and given by Benito Mussolini in the 1920s. The statue you see below is a unique stone carving, originally commissioned for a family in Treviso, who had a love for Rome. This was sculpted from the local limestone in the early 1900s. This magnificent statue is quite a unique stone piece and can be placed indoor or out.
