Le Retour des Champs ‘Return from the Harvest’ Carrara Marble, Signed and Dated

About

Carrier-Belleuse never ceased to have an impact on the Parisian art scene, and his talent allowed him to become the most sought-after artist of his time. He was at the head of a workshop of 50 employees. Among them, the famous Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917), who was apprentice at that time. He received the distinguished Légion d’Honneur 2 years before he died. Carrier-Belleuse was sometimes nicknamed “the Clodion of the Second Empire”. This marble statue is influenced by the styles of the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries: draperies, elongated proportions, a sophisticated pose, a youthful woman with a gorgeous coiffure of tiny curls, a pretty, pointed face and melancholic pensiveness. Our marble offers a vision of the domestic and traditional life in harmony with bourgeois ideals. It depicts the elegance of French art which is so very characteristic of Carrier-Belleuse. This model is well-depicted, with another example kept in the Musée d’Orsay collection in Paris, which, in terracotta ( See photo included ), and dated approximately between 1860 and 1870. Carrier-Belleuse’s works are found in Musée d’Orsay, Paris, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, Chateâu de Compiègne, Musée National Adrien Dubouché, Limoges. Carrier-Belleuse, Anizy-le-Chateau, 1824 - Sevres, 1897. Some color variation at the back of the sculpture due to natural intrusion Ref.
