17th century Louis XIV Stone Sculpture of Playing Children
About the Item
Important and very charming stone group of one child watching over his sleeping companion, in the spirit of the "Marmousets" along the "Allee d'Eau" and the sculptures of children adorning the four corners of the square pond at the gardens of Chateau de Versailles. The sensitive execution and the dynamic composition are reminiscent of the work of Gerard van Opstal (1605-1668) and Pierre le Gros the Elder, a French sculptor in the service of King Louis XIV and the son in law of the builder and architect Jean le Pautre.
