Pair of Antique French Cast Iron Vases, circa 1880

These classical French vases with their original, weathered painted finish date to circa 1880. The lip has been adorned with egg and dart style embellishments, while the gadrooned body sits on top of a circular foot, which in turn sits on a square plinth. There are two foliate handles that are S-scroll shaped and attach at the lip and the neck of the vase. This style of handle can be considered interpretations of volute kraters, which were large vessels used in ancient Greece to dilute wine. The old painted surface exhibits a mainly chalky white color but exposure to the elements have given the vases a nice patina of iron oxide. There are also hints of green (see photos)! A small drainage hole runs from the inside of each vase through the foot and plinth. Perfect for inside or out, these gorgeous French cast iron vases...
