French Carved Limestone Oeil-de-Bouef Window Surround from Provence

About the Item

This lovely architectural element from Provence has several names: oeil-de-boeuf, chien-assis, dormer, and lucarne all of which are interchangeable. Comprised of nine pieces of limestone, the building component was designed to be installed on an upper level of a house, with a window fitting inside the interior opening. Our window surround features a ball finial on top of a square plinth. The arched crown beneath has several layers of molding, each expertly carved by hand. A pair of stylized volutes with thick recessed molding flank the base of the oval opening. There is a parted leaf near the top that slightly hangs past the cavetto border that encircles the opening. At the bottom is a three-piece plinth with quarter round molding. The French carved limestone oeil-de-boeuf will make a fantastic window surround. It can also be used as a creative mirror frame or a decorative architectural piece.
