19th Century Painted French Grape Hotte from La Gironde, Doisy-Védrines

About the Item

Grape hottes were used at French vineyards during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by workers when harvesting grapes. Our wide-mouthed hotte would have been used in the 1800’s at a vineyard in La Gironde. It has a rolled rim above a second protruding molding and has been painted an orange-red. Some interesting gray patination can be seen in areas where oxidation has occurred. Black lettering with white embellishments have been painted above and below a stylized wine label: “Doisy-Vedrines Grand Cru Classe En 1876” and “Sauternes”, respectively. The label consists of a mural crown in gold above a shaped white shield that is adorned with “1892” above a two story building. The 19th century grape hotte from La Gironde would make a perfect decorative accessory for a wine room or kitchen.
