Indigenous Styled Large Handwoven Bird Beak Fancy Lidded Basket
About the Item
This Indigenous styled lidded basket is presumed to have been made in the United States in circa mid-late 20th century. The maker of the this basket is unknown, but done in the style of the North American indigenous people using the 'porcupine technique' to create representations of bird beaks around the circumference of the basket. This basket is most likely representing the Eagle, but the blue jay, crow and raven are also birds represented on baskets of this style. The basket is composed of a combination of wooden splints with reed accents. The lid and bottom ring are also accented with a light colored reed, which provides a symmetry to the basket's central ring of beak representations. The basket is in very good condition as it has been stored in a glass cabinet for the past several decades.
