"Flowering Cactus, " Rare, Brilliantly Glazed Art Deco Bowl by Waylande Gregory

About the Item

Beautifully glazed in tones of mossy green, papaya, ivory and blue topaz, this bowl by Waylande Gregory depicts a cactus laden with brilliant blossoms. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums. The piece is boldly signed on the bottom, indicating that it was made in his New York studio.
