About the Item

Algerian onyx-marble Etruscan cup, gilt bronze with champlevé enamels decorations in the style of Byzantine arabesques drawn in the Greek and Roman manuscripts. Piedouche cup laid on a square base. Decorated with ancient motive, chased gilt bronze, with two handles representing bearded masks. Signed by manufacturer, editor and founder F.BARBEDIENNE and attributed to ornemanist and drawer Louis-Constant Sévin. This cup was created by the Maison Barbedienne and first exhibited during the 1862 London World's Fair. It was awarded with three medals for Excellence, for its innovating "cloisonné" technique in enameling art objects. About the artist Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), founder, manufacturer and editor. Louis-Constant Sévin (Born in Versailles 1821 - Died in Neuilly-sur-Seine 1888) ornemanist, drawer and sculptor. The Maison Barbedienne is one of the best and this Industrial is characteristic of the union between art and industry in the history of decorative arts of the second half of the 19th century. Ferdinand Barbedienne was born in St-Martin-de-Fresnay (Calvados) in 1810 and died in Paris in 1892. In 1839 he founded his Maison where he made bronze copies of museum masterpieces. His editing process served a lot of his contemporary sculptors. He also editied a lot of furnishing bronzes in collaboration with some of the greatest ornemanists of the time, like Louis-Constant Sévin. Close collaboration between artists and manufacturer always gives birth to a high quality production because they seek the better use of progress in technical researches and a better use of machines. It is beauty emerging from technique. Thanks to their collaborations with artists, several manufacture, not only raised their level of production, but also gave Paris the title of undisputed captial of luxury industries. For almost thirty years, sculptor Louis-Constant Sévin was in charge of the furnishing bronzes production for the Maison Barbedienne. Master ornemanist, he designed some wonderful and varied works for Barbedienne. About the context Enamel From the London 1851 and then Paris 1855 World Fairs, enamel, in its wide range of techniques and polychrom effects, was brought back to artistic life and knew, under the French Second Empire a rehabilitation in Parisian decorative arts. It then became a field of study for ornemanists and many artists. Onyx-Marble Report of International Jury Commission in the 1862 London World Fair catalog, French Section N° 2871 "Onyx is the only Fine hardstone, we dare say precious, which may be used to any degree by modern industry, without considering its price, which conforms best to the desires of the artist and which can be used most harmoniously with bronze. It is like enamel to the play of light and crystal and mirrors. The master mirror markers of Florence and Venice do not produce work with a superior effect to the bevelled mirror surrounded by its large oval frame covered with gold, which is shown by the Company.".
