Pair of Samson Paris Armorial Porcelain Bowls, 20th Century

About the Item

Pair of French porcelain bowls, Samson, Paris, 20th century. Each is formed as a fluted, scallop-edged shell with a central oval opening and gilt-scrolled terminals. The white ground is moulded with low-relief scrolls and flowerheads. Over this, the bowls are hand-painted with scattered sprays of roses, other blossoms and grapes in puce, purple, blue and green. The rims and inner edges of the openings are gilded; a gilt line with small flower heads follows the scalloped outline. Each bowl is painted with a different coat of arms. One bears a blue shield with winged supporters and motto ribbons. The other bears a red shield flanked by greyhounds, with the motto Spero on a pink scroll. Both armorials sit among the floral painting. Underside with the Samson Paris mark. Length 35 cm (13.8 in), width 28 cm (11 in).
