Russel Wright for Bauer Pottery Oblong Bowl

About the Item

A vintage oblong bowl manufactured by Bauer Pottery in Atlanta, Georgia. The design is by noted midcentury designer Russel Wright. After the success of the "American Modern" line Russel Wright developed a new line of approximately twenty vases, candlesticks and other decorative objects to be manufactured at Bauer Pottery in Atlanta, Georgia. Known as his "art pottery" line it was only produced from 1945 to 1946. The production of the pieces proved to be very difficult and the line was a commercial failure. The bowl is identified as model #17A and described as "A hardboiled egg cut in half with yoke lifted out. Designed to hold bulbs but with thick walls, makes a sturdy masculine ashtray." The bowl was probably a second and was either given or sold by Bauer Pottery to an employee. The "Russal Wright" signature has been covered by the glaze, so it is not apparent. The bowl measures approximately 10 1/2 inches in length, 7 3/8 inches wide and 2 1/8 inches tall. As mentioned, the bowl is unmarked.
