Antique Derby Platters in the Meissen Style Hand Painted England Circa 1810

About the Item

This pair of Royal Crown Derby platters is hand-painted in the Meissen style, showcasing Deutsche Blumen (German flowers). This style, which was popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, depicted European flowers in a naturalistic and somewhat whimsical manner. This contrasts with the more formalized and stylized floral designs found in Oriental patterns. These platters feature an assortment of vibrant, colorful flowers beautifully painted and seemingly strewn around across the platters. Dimensions: 10.5" x 8" x 1.25" deep Condition: Excellent with minimal original firing defects Price: $380 Background of Derby Porcelain: Derby Porcelain's production dates to the mid-18th century. In 1756, William Duesbury joined Andrew Planche and John Heath to create the Nottingham Road factory, which later became Royal Crown Derby. Derby porcelain gained prominence due to its artistry and quality. In 1775, the company earned its "Crown" designation when King George III granted the factory permission to incorporate a royal crown into its back stamp. This recognition distinguished Derby from other English porcelain makers and enhanced its reputation as a producer of elite ceramics.

It is rimmed with classic Delft flowers and stylized designs around the perimeter. The plate is clearly marked VLS ( DELFT BLAUW HAND PAINTED MADE IN HOLLAND) on the back. The scalloped and fluted shape of this large platter Keramiekfabriek Velsen was founded in 1920 in the town of Velsen, nearby Haarlem in the Netherlands. It started out as an art pottery factory called the "Kennemer Pottenbakkerij". In 1936 the name was changed to Velsen. In 1943, during the second world war, the factory was ordered to move, and was resettled in the nearby town of Sassenheim. After the war the factory started to produce mainly handpainted Delftware, both in blue & white and polychrome styles. Especially the polychrome style became its strength, because Velsen used a wider and more colourful palette of colours than most other Delftware producers. Velsen also made green Delft (green & white) and red Delft...
