Decorative Round Ceramic Traditional Portuguese Style Platter

About the Item

Similar to Moriageware or Satsumaware, this platter features intricate designs which are raised or incised into the piece giving it a soft textured feel. The design is reminiscent of Portuguese design both in the colors as well as the decorations. The center of the piece features a round medallion filled with a bouquet of orange flowers encircled with orange satsuma fruit and green garlands of leaves. Encircling the medallion, are blue and orange flourished decorations on a cream background. The rim features a red, yellow and orange braided design upon a dark navy blue background and orange trim. The edges are scalloped. The base is nonagonal in shape and reads at the center in red: “For decorative purpose only. Not for food use. May poison food.” Many collectors read this and think that the piece is from Asia. However, this is not always the case. In the late 20th century, the FDA in the United’s states mandated that all ceramics imported not for food consumption be stamped with this marking. No matter the country of origin. Specifications: 12.5" diameter 1.5" tall 3 lbs.
