Antique Hand Carved Mid-19th Century Coromandel & Brass Decorative Jewelry Box
About the Item
One of a kind and excellent condition antique box.
The rare shape of this mid-1800s box is just as aesthetically pleasing as its marvelous color. Coromandel is one of the most beautiful wood types with an amazing warm color and when it is as old as this box then the patina is truly great. Another unusual and highly stylish feature are its solid brass hinges. If you look at the curved shape of both the box and the lid then you can see why conventional hinges would not have worked here. Both open and closed this hand-crafted 'object of virtue' with its perfect lines and shiny surface is an absolute joy to look at. In the bottom are very old remains of what used to be woodworm holes. It is not unusual for antiques of this age to have woodworm holes that are in fact older than the piece itself. This is because the tiny holes were already in the wood when the box was made. This wood would have been imported from colonial regions and woodworms in Europe could never 'take on' wood this hard. They simply have not evolved to be equiped with the 'tools' to nibble their way in. This aspect of this marvelous looking box too makes it a great talking piece. No matter where you decide to put it on display or what you are planning to use it for, this antique box will never fail to impress.
