19th Century Burr Walnut Double Hinged Writing Slope with Brass Edges and Inlay

About the Item

Brass bound and inlaid burled walnut travel desk of large size and with double hinges. The first section lifts to a vertical position with document storage in the lid, the second section lifts to a horizontal position creating the writing slope with tooled leather. the two sections of the slope lift revealing storage compartments. The upper part of the slope has a panel hiding three secret drawers which are accessed by putting a brass pin into a hole in a compartment below the paper roller and releasing a spring lock. On inspection the drawers were found to contain receipts and notes referencing a Miss McDougall, all dating from the 1890s, A brass plaque on the top has the monogram "M. E. McD." Likely her or a family member.
