19th Century Chinoiserie Lacquer Sewing Box, Hand-Painted with Gilt

About the Item

This is a remarkable 19th century, Japanese lacquered sewing box with multiple compartments on the interior. The exterior is decorated in elaborate black and gilded motifs including flowers, foliage and grapes. The top portion of the interior is fitted with multiple compartments, one with an elaborately decorated lid, and beautifully carved notions, including various bobbins, pins, a little silk pouch and silk thread. The bottom drawer opens to reveal a wider compartment with an elaborately decorated lid, and other small compartments. The workmanship on this box is stunning throughout. Two locks and one key which fits both locks. Some curving to the top lid. When unlocked the lid does not close flush with the box. When locked however, it closes perfectly. Please see photos. Some buckling to the black lacquer on the inside of the lid and on the underside of the box, and three small, loose divider pieces. Overall this box is in incredible condition for its age.
