English 19th Century Turned Lignum Vitae String Box

About the Item

English 19th Century turned Lignum Vitae string box of "pillar box" form, the ring turned lid with threaded interior over cylindrical base similarly threaded and turned from a single block of the vividly grained Lignum Vitae or "tree of life" in latin - long cherished for its medicinal purposes as well as its beautiful grain and ability to take a good polish. String boxes were essential desk and office accessories before the invention of scotch tape, which eliminated the need to tie up parcels, now they are cherished for their beauty and variety - plus handy for paperclips!
