Antique Capo di Monte Oval Casket

About the Item

This box is an unusually large and decorative example of the work of this factory. Both highly ornamental and functional, it is ideal for dressing table or more formal settings. The decoration is molded with bas-reliefs and painted with scenes from antiquity, and with masks, garlands, winged sphinxes and stylized acanthus. The gilt painting, banding and brass hinged cover add to the richness of the presentation. It is marked in under-glaze blue with a crowned N. These boxes are frequently sold as being Italian but are actually German. See Rontgen's majestic work for illustrations of this mark correctly ascribed to German Factories.
