About the Item
Good size, one of a kind and all hand-crafted antique box with an elegant Asian scene.
If you are looking for a stylish and truly decorative antique box to grace your credenza or side table then this early 1900s gem could be yours to enjoy soon. The frame of this box is made of elmwood and the perfectly embossed 'skin' is all hand-crafted out of copper and brass. Each sheet of copper has its own beautiful, Asian decor and each sheet has been hand-hammered onto the wooden frame with tiny brass nails on the sides and larger ones with great looking heads on top. In the stunning, floral cartouche a Japanese lady (or possibly geisha) is sitting on a daybed. Above her head are three beautiful Asian lanterns and on a tray next to her are 'tools' for needlework. From start to finish, it must have taken a highly skilled artisan a great many hours to handcraft this unique box. The embossed copper and brass artwork was done in the Arts and Crafts era, but the elm box could actually be much older, because when you look closely at image 9, 10 and 11 then you can see that it was originally made with a lock. Pieces of matching wood have been inlaid where the lock once was and from the brass decoration on the front of this box you can see that there was never a keyhole there. If you look closely at image 17 then you can see that at some point in time the screws for the hinges have been replaced by ones that were slightly to large. We really don't want to change this minor imperfection, also, because it ads to the character and history of this unique antique. Both the elmwood and the embossed copper over the many decades have 'grown' the kind of patina that antique enthousiasts around the globe love to look at.
