About the Item

Chinese black lacquer box dating from the early 1800s to 1820s. This piece was originally an interior compartment from a larger work box, made for export during the period. The surface shows an elegant swirling lacquer pattern with unusually heavy use of gold decoration. The design features a pagoda with a stylized tree, rendered with fine detail and rich depth. A refined and rare surviving element of a more elaborate export work box, notable for its quality and beautiful early lacquer craftsmanship.
