Fine Georgian Document Box of Walnut Cross Banded and Inlaid, circa 1780

About the Item

This is a very good quality English Georgian period box or document box with fine inlaid and cross banded detail, having a hinged lid with a brass swan neck handle, dating to the late 18th century, George 3rd period, circa 1780. The box has a rectangular shape and has been beautifully handmade with much fine detail. All four sides and the top have central walnut veneered sections with each piece of hardwood, having been chosen for the fine curl figure of its grain. The top and sides all have cross banded side sections with mitred corners using a different hardwood with "string or line" inlay detail between the X-banding and the central sections. All external edges are inlaid with boxwood edging. Additionally there is a diamond shaped key hole escutcheon and matching diamond to the top (between the handle) both in satinwood with further edging inlay to both diamonds. The top of the base section of the box is slightly proud of the sides producing a "cock-beeded like" effect around the front and sides which is another small detail defining the overall quality of this piece. The box has a lid fitted with a cast brass swan-neck handle, brass hinges and brass lock. The keyhole is inlaid with a diamond shaped satinwood escutcheon. There is no lock key with this box. This box has developed a beautiful lustrous mellow color and patination to all its external surfaces, due to use, polishing and natural ageing over about 240 years. The inside of the box is lined with a decorative thick paper and the base has a green felt fabric to it which would have been applied at sometime in its history. We date this piece to the George III period, circa 1780. This item is very decorative and has many possible uses as a document, jewelry or small collectables or keepsake box. Overall a fine quality Georgian piece.
