Modern Girih Treasure Chest Tall Cabinet in Satinwood Marquetry and Sycamore

About the Item

Back in October 2016, on one of his many travels to the Persian Gulf in his role as Honorary Chairman of Christie’s Europe Middle East, Russia and India, David Linley’s fascination with Islamic art and architecture was reignited. A photograph of a vibrant tile mosaic pattern was sent back to the LINLEY studio on Pimlico Road, inspiring the design of the spectacular Girih Treasure Chest. The Girih Treasure Chest explores Islamic pattern through detailed wooden marquetry in brilliant sapphire blue and rich gold tones. Girih is an Islamic decorative art form consisting of geometric lines that create an interlaced framework. As if a precious stone in a delicate claw setting, the chest perches on a simple sycamore frame which is supported by a forged brass metal stretcher. As the center of the design lies an eight-pointed star, taken from a beautiful mosaic tile pattern that caught the eye of LINLEY Founder and Chairman David Linley on a visit to Doha, Qatar back in October 2015. Adorning all façades of the chest, the pattern is created using a specially dyed deep blue ripple sycamore, sycamore and satinwood, which gradually turns from gold to grey to blue in a quasi-crystalline pattern, breaking up as it transitions from the base to the top of the chest. Finished in elegant high gloss, the design is elevated by the choice of materials - while the undulating grain in the ripple sycamore veneer adds opulence and depth to the pattern, the natural sycamore frame will gradually transform into a beautiful golden hue when exposed to sunlight, gaining richness and character over time. The inside of the chest is softer but no less striking, using elegant gold and white gold leaf to replicate the exterior geometric pattern. Designed to hold drinks and precious objects, the interior is split into compartments and drawers featuring hand-cut dovetails and finished with bronze metal handles inlaid with precious stones, at the back of the cabinet’s interior is a mirrored glass surface which gives the appearance of infinite distance. The chest is cradled by a metal base crafted with a brushed brass finish with a glass eglomisé panel at the base.

With buttons hidden within the marquetry, the secret doors...

As the 16th century precursors to museums, ‘Wunderkammer’ or ‘cabinets of curiosity’ collected and categorized objects of interest to a specific subject be it geology, ethnography, anthropology, etc for preservation and categorization. In the original terminology ‘cabinet’ did not mean a simple piece of furniture but designated an entire room, which is why these cabinets were originally maintained by the mercantile or aristocratic classes. In modern architecture, our specific interest, the ‘Wunderkammer’ brings to mind European post-war housing projects such as Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation projects or the housing units at Pessac with individuals inhabiting individual apartments made specific by containing the personal artifacts of those occupying them and amassed as a single building. This miniature...
