Handmade Cribbage Board with Brass Inlay and Magnetic Storage Drawers
About the Item
A cribbage board made from brass and steel with intricate inlayed brass details.
A felt-lined drawer on one end holds a deck of cards while the two drawers on the opposite end hold pegs for scoring. Each drawer has magnetic retention to keep them snuggly within the box when not in use.
This design is modeled off of the traditional board, containing four runs of 30 holes, with each run divided into 5 point sections. An Old English game from the early 1600s, Cribbage later found popularity in the American navy for its ability to be played in the tight quarters of a submarine. It has also been a mainstay at my personal family gatherings and I find a quaint historical parallel in our shared love of the game coming from American children of British parents. This is an homage to them.
The brass detailing has been lightly antiqued while the main steel body has been oxidized prior to a statuary bronze patination using our unique formula. The whole piece is then sealed with a satin clear finish and waxed. As with all handmade objects, slight variations in the finished surface are to be expected if not sought out. Note - pegs and card brand may vary.

McDevitt Metal
John McDevitt was born in the Cotswolds, England where he studied at several art colleges to graduate level. He later settled in Brooklyn, NY - opening a metal shop in DUMBO in 1992. His move to the United States also enabled further study of the craft, obtaining instruction by Frank Turley in New Mexico & courses at The Pratt Institute in New York. McDevitt’s long association with NYC based antique dealers Burden & Izett led to his work being acquired by some of the world's leading interior designers, as well as establishing an auction record at Christie's. It is with pleasure that he now brings a collection of his designs to the 1stDibs platform. Over 30 years John has also undertaken a diverse range of commercial work including the 40' wings for the dragon featured in the Broadway production of Wicked as well as projects for SNL. His work extends to framing for some of the leading stained glass conservators, working on Tiffany, John la Farge, & William Jay Bolton windows. McDevitt's architectural metalwork can also be found in numerous restaurants & bars around NYC as well as custom work within dozens of residences throughout the City. Despite over forty years of working with metal, John still finds delight in producing unique objects with an emphasis on function, proportion, & finish. Today he continues to do so whilst passing on his plethora of knowledge designing new pieces with his son, Jack, whose skills in 3D modeling & CAD have modernised the way they create.
