About the Item

A finely crafted Japanese tabletop cabinet from the early 20th century, this compact storage piece is richly detailed with traditional decorative techniques and export-era flourishes. The two upper doors are adorned with hand-applied lacquer panels featuring birds perched on flowering branches, with shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay and delicate gold maki-e work adding dimension and elegance. The birds—likely peacocks—are set against a black lacquer ground and framed in faceted wood panels with corner metal mounts, typical of Meiji to Taishō period craftsmanship. Beneath, two drawers feature geometric parquetry inlays in contrasting tones, a nod to Hakone yosegi marquetry traditions. Brass pulls and detailed corner fittings underscore the box’s export-oriented construction, while the hinged doors open to reveal a single compartment, once used for personal storage—perhaps writing materials, calligraphy tools, or small valuables.
