Japanese Laquered Box with Hinged Lid and Lock, Taisho Period, circa 1920
This is a beautiful papier mâché, lacquered lidded box, which we attribute to being made in Japan during the early 20th century, Taisho period, circa 1920. The box has an oblong shape with a hinged slightly domed top and an original fitted lock with a decorative metal escutcheon. This is a very decorative box with a delicately hand-painted scene to the top of a bird in flight with butterflies and leaves. The base color is black with the painting in a red ochre and gold gilt, all in varying shades. The inside and base of the box and lid are black lacquered. This item would make a lovely jewelry box. There is no key to the lock.
