Normandy Marriage Chest France Early 19th Century. Painted Pine This painted pine Coffre de Mariage was traditionally given to a bride in Normandy to hold her precious items. Decorated with painted floral motifs often including hearts and birds as in this example. The chest is a celebration of Love, Fertility and domestic prosperity. These remarkable painted chests were modest in material but no less expressive in sentiment. Their vivid colour and painted decoration reflect the craftsmanship of Normandy, lasting treasures of matrimonial union. Remarkable unadulterated condition with original painted finish. Wear commensurate with age. France, Circa 1890.
